NW Star Academy's History

NW Star Academy began sponsoring summer baseball teams in 2002. In 2004 it coordinated a combined American Legion team. The team was composed of players from various PIL High Schools. The club went on an amazing late season run to include winning the Area II Championship and advancing to the AAA legion state tournament. NW Star Academy was named the 2004 Oregon American Legion Sponsor of the year.

After two years of American Legion baseball, the Academy went in a different direction and played as an independent 19U team. The team makeup consisted of a balance of high school seniors and college freshman against teams from American Legion, Connie Mack, and the West Coast Collegiate League. The team had success going 37 – 11 – 1 and won two tournaments.

Large scale changes continued in 2007 as two teams were formed: 18U and at the Collegiate level. The collegiate team played in our newly formed PNWL and consisted of collegiate players who had eligibility remaining. The team played a largely independent schedule against other college teams and elite high school teams. The 2007 18U team was formed by bringing together the best high school seniors. The team played under the Connie Mack affiliation and competed in the competitive Washington State Baseball League against storied teams such as Seattle Stars, Spokane Dodgers, Olympia Pepsi and more. The team went 40 – 14 and 23 – 4 in league play. NWS became the first non-Washington team to win the regular season league championship. The team paved the way for NW Star Academy to become the elite 18U program in Oregon.

In 2008, NWS sponsored three summer teams: 14U, 18U, and Collegiate. The Collegiate team captured the league championship. The Senior Babe Ruth team played 45 – 50 game schedule and played against in the Washington State Baseball League. In post-season play, the Academy represented Oregon in Senior Babe Ruth. The team was composed of high school juniors and seniors who wanted to test themselves and be truly prepared for college baseball. The team captured the State of Oregon and Pacific N.W. Championship advancing to the World Series Championship in Ohio where they captured the National title and were awarded the Nike Oregon Team of the Year at their annual banquet.

In 2009 NW Star returned to the American Legion Affiliation. The team was formed with players from several local schools under the direction of Head Coach Garet Luebbert. The team advanced to the Semi-finals of the Oregon State American Legion Tournament in Corvallis where they lost to #1 seed Medford. The team posted 33 – 19 record in a season that included two no-hitters by NW Star pitchers.

In 2010 and 2011, the team continued to play within the American Legion format. Many of the players on the roster completed very successful High school careers and team successes, continuing the positive traditions of NW Star Academy.

In 2012, NW Star Academy and Productions will host the American Legion State Championships at Concordia University...
